More About the Dordogne

This region is rich in historic sites such as the famous Lascaux Caves, the stunning city of Sarlat and the fascinating bastide towns which run along the spectacular Dordogne river. There are many magnificent châteaux to be found throughout this beautiful area of France from Nontron in the north to Monbazillac in the far south. Périgueux, the capital town, has regular wonderful markets, excellent shopping and magnificent architecture. In Spring the air is filled with the scent of fruit trees in blossom and orchids and other wild flowers grow in abundance. Summer is a time for lazing around the swimming pool before indulging in wonderful food and wine. September marks the beginning of the grape harvest and the exuberant wine festivals that last until November when the first of the new vintage is consumed. Few delicacies are savoured with as much relish as the truffle noire du Périgord. This black truffle, harvested between December and March, may almost cost its weight in gold, but its taste and aroma are priceless.
