Alicante Resort Information

The Alicante Region of the Costa Blanca in Spain offers a wide range of holiday resorts to suit all ages and budgets.

Old Alicante's most impressive architectural achievement is the imposing Castillo de Santa Bárbara. One of Europes largest standing medieval fortresses, it perches atop the summit of the 166 metre high Benacantil mountain. The pale-coloured stone looks as if the fortress is a spectacular carving from the rock itself or a giants sand castle! Inside you can see three eras of the one building encompassing the 9th to 18th centuries. Its easily accessible to everyone by lift up through the mountain from Jovellanas Avenue. For more history go Alicante's oldest church, St Marys, built over the ruins of a main mosque from previous Moorish rule. The gothic style Iglesia dates back to the 14th century and today looks in need of repair. The exterior is understated, but take time to sit on a bench in the small, serene square in front to admire the worn architecture whose backdrop is the castle.

Alicante's main attraction for holidaymakers comes in the form of the great beaches along the Costa Blanca, and the lovely weather throughout the year. There are plenty of water parks and other fun family attractions to enjoy, and the nightlife in the many small and large Spanish beach resorts is renowned. The best beach in the area is San Juan - a 10-minute bus ride from Alicante's centre. You'll find 5km of white sand and plenty of cafes and bars. There are also three small coves, Palmera, Cantalares and Judios. They are difficult to access and therefore appropriate as nudist beaches. The small, sandy Almadraba beach and the well hidden Albufereta beach are ideal for water sports in safe surroundings. Further south is the Playa del Coco, next to the regional railway station. This beach connects to Playa del Postiguet, located close to the city centre, with an attractive promenade, flanked by palm trees. The last of the city's beaches is Saladar, broad, sandy and open. The pedestrian walkway here gives panoramic views of the bay of Alicante. A ferry departs from the harbour for day trips to the island of Tabarca, where automobiles are banned and you can sample traditional fishermens cuisine. It was once a refuge for pirates, an 18th century fortified town and settling ground for Italian fishermen.

Alicante also has an array of palaces worth visiting, including the Gavina Palace which now houses the Provincial Gallery with fine paintings from the 19th century. The main theatre dates from 1847 and is a fine example of classical construction. The bullring is one of the oldest in Spain still in use. Built in 1849 it has since been restored and enlarged. The current design dates from 1888.

Alicante's nightlife is excellent, with a variety of places to either get hammered and party, or alternatively, just to unwind and relax. The surrounding countryside is most picturesque, with little villages to explore if you take a self-drive tour of the region. Alicante itself has a few excellent shopping areas, where you can pick up all the essentials for a holiday in the region. Should you be staying on a self-catering basis in Alicante, there are a number of super markets where you can get everything you need.

Other local leisure facilities include Golf courses, tennis, football, squash, all water sports, boat hire and trips, horse-riding, go-kart racing tracks for both adults and children, a small fairground and night-clubs.

Alicante enjoys a typical subtropical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination. Ideal for those beach lovers.

Alicante is small enough to go everywhere by foot - slowly! The pace of life in the town is a delicious break from the madness of other holiday destinations. You've got variety on your doorstep and the locals are friendly and will happily chat.

Alicante airport offers a huge number of cheap flights from UK and European airports every day, this makes taking a Alicante holiday rental villa or apartment so popular, and relax in the beautiful North Costa Blanca.
