Sao Miguel Island, it is not surprising that many tourists start their exploration of this amazing archipelago in São Miguel, the principal island of the Azores. São Miguel is the largest island measuring 65 km long and 16 km wide,  with around 135,000 inhabitants, this represents more than half of the archipelago’s total population and is also the most populated island of the Azores. Sao Miguel is also known as 'the green island’ because of its extraordinary fertility. In the centre of the island rises the Serra da Àgua de Pau, a mountain range reaching an altitude of 940 m above sea level. The impressive volcanic craters of Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas have turned to mysterious mountain lakes with crystal-clear water representing today some of the main tourist attractions.

Pico Island, called Pico because it has the highest mountain peak in all of Portugal at 2,352 m, making Pico Island stand out from all the other islands of the archipelago. Also famous for its whaling tradition, Pico is the second largest island measuring about 46 km long and 15 km wide. The distances to the other islands of the central group, of which Pico is the most southern, are about 8 km to Faial, 15 km to São Jorge, 80 km to Graciosa and 100 km to Terceira. Pico offers a good network of roads, on which it is possible to drive all around the coasts and visit the interior of the island, offering magnificent views across the Atlantic to the other islands.

Flores Island, is the fourth smallest and most western island of the Azores and is also known as 'the flower island'  due to the mass of flowers and plants, with many seeds carried over from America by migrating birds that grow on this island and make it one of the most beautiful and colourful. The island measures 17 km long and 12 km wide and reaches its maximum height of 914 m at the peak of Morro Alto in the north of the island. The island’s almost 4,000 inhabitants live in the two villages of Santa Cruz das Flores, the capital located in the centre of the east coast, and Lajes das Flores on the south coast.

Terceira Island, is the third largest island home to the international Airport of Lajes and is the second most important island after Sao Miguel. The island measures 29 km long and up to 18 km wide. The island has about 58,000 inhabitants who make their living today mainly out of agriculture, the island has become the main cereal producer along with a large amount of cattle raising.

Faial Island, is the fifth largest of the archipelago and is one of the most charming islands of the Azores. Faial Island measures 21 km long and 14 km wide at its most extreme points. The distances to its neighbours are around 7 km to Pico, 19 km to São Jorge, 85 km to Graciosa and 124 km to Terceira. Faial’s biggest attraction is its capital, the town of Horta with its yacht harbour  and is probably the archipelago’s liveliest town with a very distinct cosmopolitan feel.

Corvo Island, is the smallest, most northerly and most inaccessible island of the archipelago. The island measures about 6 km long and 4 km wide  and originated from one volcano, which was active for the last time about two million years ago. The distance to its southern neighbour Flores is about 24 km, about one hour with a speedboat, but it can also be reached by it can also by reached by small inter-island planes from Flores or Faial.

Sao Jorge Island is the fourth largest of the Azores islands and measures 58 km long and only 8 km wide. The island is a long and thin shape and is situated about 19 km from Pico, 39 km from Faial, 60 km from Graciosa, 93 km from Terceira and 245 km from São Miguel. A paradise for walkers who are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views across the island and down to the coastal villages, with stunning views as far as the surrounding islands of Pico, Faial and Graciosa, on clear days, even the outlines of Terceira can be seen.

Graciosa Island, is the second smallest island of the archipelago and it is also the flattest and the driest, located about 80 km northwest of Terceira. The Island measures just  12.5 km length and 8 km width. Graciosa’s landmarks are the Dutch-style windmills with their peculiar onion-shaped red caps, considered the prettiest of the whole archipelago. There were originally about 30 many have been renovated in the last years and today there are around four, which are still functioning.

Santa Maria Island, is the third smallest island and also the most southerly of the Azores Islands. Located about 85 km south of Sao Miguel it measures 18 km long and almost 10 km wide. Santa Maria is also known as 'the yellow island' due to the amount of yellow flowers on the island, it also boast some fantastic deserted powder white sand beaches. With the sunniest and driest climate of the Azores this really is an alternative beach holiday destination.
