This wonderful group of islands is divided into Gimnesias (Mallorca, Menorca and Cabrera) in the North, and Pitiusas (Ibiza y Formentera) in the South-West. Their excellent climate with some 300 days of sun per year, wonderful beaches, a rich cultural offer and the unusual hospitality of their inhabitants make Balearic Islands one of the preferred holiday destinations in Spain. There are more passengers at the airport of Palma de Mallorca than at the airport of any other Spanish city. Hardly anybody who has spent holidays here didn't wish to return, in fact, many visitors have made the islands their permanent home. Each of the islands has a strong personality all of its own, and each of them offers much more than just the possibility to spend nice holidays at the beach. Majorca is an elegant island and has to offer anything a visitor might dream of. Tourism in Mallorca started to develop already in the 1920s, and until the Spanish Civil War it was mainly intellectuals and artists who were attracted by this island. Mallorca's wonderful climate, beautiful landscapes as well as its cosmopolitan ambience make it a privileged holiday resort, with a cultural offer comparable to the one of many European capitals. The Auditiorio de Palma, for instance, ranks among Europe's top concert halls. At Mallorca, you will find relaxation, inspiration, culture and entertainment. Legend tells that the winds of Menorca modify the personality of people. Maybe that is the reason why those who came here once as tourists mostly return. Menorca certainly has a very strong personality, and a very different one to the rest of the islands. Menorca, the "minor" island, as it was called by Romans, has an almost virginal interior (compared for instance to the "major" island, Mallorca) and shows interesting remains of its old history. On the other hand, there are beaches and lonely bays around it at a length of 216 kilometres. An ideal resort for all those who are looking for true relaxation. Ibiza, often called the White Island for its typical architecture, became a major centre of touristic attraction during the 1960s, being then famous for its "Hippie-Culture" and nudist beaches. Today Ibiza has an ample offer as well for families and older visitors, anyhow, still there are the young ones who are attracted by the island's rollicking nightlife, which already starts in the afternoon, at the beaches and in the centre of town, to continue until dawn in the numerous discotheques. If you leave the beaches behind you to explore the island's interior, you will find a pure and simple Mediterranean culture, and remains of populations which inhabited Ibiza thousands of years ago, as for instance the famous wall-paintings of Ses Fontelles. The small island of Formentera, with a surface of 90 sq.km. and some 5200 inhabitants, is located 11 miles from the south-eastern coast of Ibiza. The sea is visible from practically any point of the island, and there are numerous great beaches and lonely bays, some of them with incredible grottos. Its favourable climate, with springtime temperatures during almost all the year, its rich vegetation of pines as well as palms, and its quiet and relaxed ambience make Formentera a true paradise. Weather in the Balearic Islands The Balearic Islands enjoy a classic Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters and hot (though not excessive!) summers. Tourist numbers reach an unsurprising peak in the summer months from July to September, with up to 11 hours of sunshine per day. However the mild weather make the islands an attractive holiday destination throughout the year and many visitors wisely choose to visit in the quieter periods. Rainfall in the Balearics varies widely, with virtually none during the summer and a lot in winter. The result is a verdant green landscape throughout all but the hottest periods, whilst the island still sees over 300 days of sunshine per year. No guide to the Balearic Islands could fail to mention the famous tramontana - a prevailing northerly wind that has given rise to the islands being called the "windy islands". Holidaymakers come and go without experiencing this but islanders certainly feel its force, particularly in March. The islanders actually have names for all eight winds (depending on their direction) and turbines have been erected at Milà to harness wind as a renewable source of energy. This was the first wind farm in the Balearic Islands, with proposals under review for up to four more sites. Golf in the Balearic Islands Mallorca Island, also known as the Mediterranean Lady has to offer everything a golfing visitor might dream of and is fast becoming the Golfing Mecca of the Mediterranean. Mallorca has over 14 courses to choose from such as Club de Golf Poniente near the popular resort Magalluf, or Golf Santa Ponsa 1played by the rich and famous including Prince Andrew, Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta Jones. Canyamel Golf and Club de Golf Vall D'or offer extraordinary views, and Golf de Andratx is exquisitely designed and very challenging Legend tells that the winds of Menorca modify the personality of people. Maybe that is the reason why those who come here once as golfing visitors mostly return. Menorca certainly has a very strong personality, and a very different one to the rest of the islands. Menorca's only course Golf Son Parc Menorca with a natural layout is the closet course to the sea in all of the islands. More than 18 kilometres of beaches await you on the island of Ibiza, allowing you to choose the atmosphere, the winds and the activities you wish to practise in any of them. Softly undulating green hills swathed in Pine trees spread out before you; picturesque, whitewashed little villages surrounding Medieval churches; acres of Almond, Olive and Fig trees, interspersed with startling plashes of purple, pink and red from flowering Bougainvillea, Oleander and Hibiscus. What a way to enjoy a round of golf, and Ibiza has it all with Club de Golf Roca llisa and the favourite Club de Golf Ibiza. Together Formentera and Ibiza make up the Pitiusa Islands, which in Greek means "islands of pine trees". Formentera is located 11 miles south of Ibiza, separated from which by the islets and reefs of Es Freus, which marks the path between the two islands. As yet Formentera has no course of its own, but fortunately it is only 30 minutes away by ferry from nearby Ibiza, if you're planning on playing golf during your stay. Beaches in the Balearic Islands The beaches in Mallorca are spectacular! Mallorca's wonderful climate, beautiful landscapes as well as its cosmopolitan ambience make it a privileged holiday resort, with a cultural offer comparable to the one of many European capitals. Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands. More than 18 kilometres of beaches await you on the island of Ibiza, allowing you to choose the atmosphere, the winds and the activities you wish to practise in any of them. There are beaches of all sorts - family, sporting, solitary, wild, tranquil, with deep or shallow waters for children's bathing. Menorca has beaches and lonely bays around it at a length of 216 kilometres. An ideal resort for all those who are looking for true relaxation. Minorca has a land area of 702 square kilometres and a coastline of 216 kilometres. The island's climate is typically Mediterranean and is well known for its mild temperatures. The island of Formentera is surrounded by beaches of fine white sand, the majority situated in small coves and all enjoying crystal clear waters. Formentera is the smallest and less populated island of the Balearic archipelago and has cultivated a strong personality and distinctive charm.
