Blanes Tourist Information - Costa Brava Blanes is situated at the mouth of the river Tordera, in the extreme south of the province of Girona. Its northern boundaries are the districts of Maçanet de la Selva, Vidreres and Lloret de Mar; in the east, Lloret de Mar, in the south, the Mediterranean, and in the west, the river Tordera serves as a dividing line from the municipal districts of Tordera, Malgrat de Mar and Palafolls. The coast of Blanes has 4 km. of very different kinds of beaches. Steep rocky cliffs and small inviting coves alternate within its scenery. The resort is popular with Spanish tourists and also attracts international tourists due to its location just 60 kilometres north of Barcelona airport. For families and couples seeking an easy going "sea, sun and sand" holiday, Blanes has much to offer. This was once a small fishing town and still retains some of its original charm though the main beachfront is now lined with high rise buildings and all the features of sun-worshipping mass tourism. The resort's four-kilometre stretch of coastline consists of wide sandy bays and small rocky coves, most of which are well served with water sports and other tourist facilities. The beaches are the main attraction for the vast majority of tourists but are never over-crowded. And if you tire of the beach there are plenty of interesting day trips and local excursions to be enjoyed within easy reach of the resort.
Blanes has about 150 restaurants which offer different specialities with Catalonian, Dutch, German, French and Chinese cooking. You will find restaurants, from the most simple, to those preparing exquisite meals. Some old farm houses have been converted into restaurants specialising in Catalonian cooking. The dishes which have given most renown to the Blanes cuisine are those made from fresh fish. Apart from the restaurants, there are numerous bars with different styles and atmospheres. There are also 9 discotheques. Shopping is one of the most active sectors of the town, with more than 650 shops in different areas of Blanes, the most important of which is the town centre. Blanes is the most important commercial centre of the region. On Monday mornings, in the Passeig de Mar, the weekly market offers customers clothes, souvenirs and all kinds of objects. In the fruit and vegetable market, country people from Blanes and its surrounding districts gather together to sell their product in the Passeig de Dintre from Monday to Saturday, in the mornings. From Monday to Friday, in the afternoon, the fresh fish, which the Blanes fishermen have caught in their daily work, is auctioned in the Fish Market. Many of the characteristic species of our Mediterranean coast can be admired. Back from the seafront you'll find evidence of a town steeped in history, with ancient monuments, churches and buildings still standing as reminders of this area's colourful past. The medieval castle of Sant Joan still looks down on the town though it's seen a few changes since its construction started in the 13th century…no modern yacht marina, cheap "Chinkies" and pedaloes for hire way back then. The first settlers are thought to have inhabited the area as far back as the third century BC and archaeologists have excavated the remains of houses from the first century BC. Blanes is famous for its two botanical gardens which boast 11,000 different plant species including some of the most important collections of yucca palms, aloes and cacti in Europe. The gardens, developed from the local habitat and contributions from private collections and nurseries around the world, attract more than 300,000 visitors a year. A little further afield, there are the major visitor attractions of Barcelona (with its famous fountains and fabulous Gaudi architecture) and the Benedictine monastery in the extraordinary mountainous region of Montserrat, to the north west of Barclona. Kids will love a day out at Water World, Europe's biggest water park near Lloret de Mar, the Marineland complex just south of Blanes and Port Aventura, the Universal Studio theme park near Tarragona. Blanes is the region’s main town for shopping, with more than 650 shops in its centre. Don’t miss the Thursday morning market in the Passeig del Mar, where you can buy clothes and souvenirs. There’s also a fruit and vegetable market in the Passeig del Dintre, every morning from Monday to Saturday, and every weekday afternoon the fishermen’s daily catch is auctioned in the fish market.
