Bulgaria Tourist Information & Useful FAQ's Visa Requirements All tourists from Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia need a passport to be able to stay in the country for more than 3 months. In other cases, a Visa is needed to be able to stay for any length of time in Bulgaria. Weather Immunisations No international immunisation is needed when entering Bulgaria. Electricity The electrical current in Bulgaria is of 220 Volts / 50 Hz and the plugs and sockets are under European regulations. In some hotels, it is possible to be supplied with adaptor plugs for 110 Volts. The best thing would be to equip yourself with a suitable transformer before travelling, to avoid damaging any electrical appliances. Currency Since January 2007, Bulgaria’s currency includes the Euro, although the Lev is currently used by all locals. The Lev is tied to the Euro at a fixed rate; €1 = Lv1.955. For UK travels a guide exchange rate is Lv2.81 to the £1. Postal Service Most of post-offices open at 9am until 6pm with an hours lunch break. Tipping All prices normally include taxes and service, but it is common to tip services like taxis or restaurants around 5%, or just some change in case of small amounts like in a café or bar. Travellers' Cheques Exchanging foreign money or traveller’s cheques can be done in banks, exchange bureaus and hotels. (ATM) machines allow people to withdraw money using various types of credit cards like, Visa, American Express, Maestro and others. These cards are normally accepted in most commercial establishments. Driving Driving is on the right side. Speed limits are strictly adhered to: 120kph (75mph) on motorways, 90kph (56mph) outside built-up areas and 50kph (31mph) in built-up areas.
