Perpetual Spring and Summer, beautiful beaches, superbly equipped holiday resorts, watersports and waterparks, golf holidays, excursions and all round holiday fun are indeed what many Brits think of when they think of the Canary Islands, and it's all here in abundance. However there's more to the Canaries than Tenerife's Playa de las Americas and Gran Canaria's Playa del Ingles! Discover a diverse history stretching back beyond Spanish colonialism in the 15th century to the history of the Guanche original settlers, a huge selection of national parks offering some of the most exotic landscapes in the world including the laurisilva forests on Tenerife and La Gomera, the pine forests of El Pinar on El Hierro and the rugged heights of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park on La Palma. Ecotourism in the Canaries sits alongside the traditional resort holiday these days.

Most of the Canary Islands (7 islands including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera, plus 6 little islets) is actually under the sea. What you see above water is only about 10 percent of a hugh volcanic mountain range formed 30 million years ago. Many will be familiar with the iconic Teide and Teide National Park on Tenerife, but perhaps less familiar with the barren beauty of Timanfaya and the volcano route on Lanzarote or the Fuencaliente volcanoes on La Palma (the most recent volcanic activity has actually been on La Palma in 1971). Cosmopolitan and bustling Spanish cities are here on the Canaries too, at Las Palmas the capital of Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz on Tenerife. Top beach resorts, stunning landscapes, art, history and culture galore - ever heard of Cesar Manrique? You certainly will on a visit to Lanzarote. With cheap car hire and cheap flights it's easy to push out in the Canaries and discover all these different flavours.

Weather in the Canary Islands

If you take a closer look at the Canary Islands weather, you'll certainly discover the expected guaranteed all year round sunshine and high temperatures averaging at 20 degrees centigrade around the coastal resorts making it an ideal winter sun holidays destination. However inland and often in the northern or elevated areas on each of the islands the weather and temperatures become a little more unpredictable as you reach heights of upto 3718m at the peak of El Teide on Tenerife (Spain's highest mountain incidently!). Most of the Canary Islands are actually mini micro-climates, cooler than you'd expect for the latitude so close to Africa and the Sahara due to the cooling Trade Winds coming down from the North. Not by accident are most of the bustling resorts on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria located in the more arid southern regions. At Playa de Ingles on Gran Canaria and Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje on Tenerife you can expect pretty much all year round sunshine with warm temperatures approximately between 19 and 25 degrees centigrade, pushing often well up into the 30s during the peak summer months. In the interiors and to the north however be prepared for occasional cloud and much cooler temperatures up in the mountains. The picture is pretty much the same across the Canaries, including La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. Warm around the low lying coast, but cooler in the mountainous interiors. Essential to the ecosytems of the laurisilva forests in the centre of Tenerife and La Gomera, as well as in El Hierro and La Palma's Caldera are the mists and cloud which often encircle the heights. La Gomera's Garajonay national park has a perpetual mist. In contrast occasionally in the late summer months particularly the Canaries can be hit for several days by what is called 'African Weather'. This happens when hot winds from the Sahara descend on the Canaries carrying fine sand and high temperatures across the Canary Islands, particularly the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. When it comes it usually lasts for three or four days and temperatures often push up as high as the early 40s.

Golf in the Canary Islands

Golfing Holiday choice on the Canary Islands is superb. Tenerife currently offers the largest choice of golf courses, with some of the best around the southern resorts. Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura also offer a superb selection of golf course, and Fuerteventura particularly has several more golf courses currently being built (one is to be in Jandia). Lanzarote has a particularly good golf course ideally located just outside Costa Teguise and even tiny La Gomera now has its own luxury golf course situated near the airport in the south of the island.

Beaches in the Canary Islands

Many of the top ten beaches on the Canary Islands you'll find on Fuerteventura, but some of Lanzarote' beaches are close on their heels. Canaries best beaches are very much dependent on taste, some will be looking for deserted and quiet endless sandy beaches, others will prefer sheltered family beaches with calm waters, and watersports fanatics will be looking for waves, wind and endless flat sands. You'll find all of these on the Canaries, but for pure aesthetic value Canaries top ten beaches are: 1. Sotavento on Fuerteventura - endless golden sands, perfect windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions. You'll think you're in the Caribbean here. 2. Playa de Jandia at Morro Jable/Fuerteventura - endless golden sands, ample watersports and stunning backdrop of Jandia mountains. 3. Famara beach, Lanzarote - surfing hotspot, beautiful golden sands, family friendly although a lively swell so watch young children. 4. Puerto Naos, La Palma - a well kept secret this one. Sublime natural black sandy beach lined with palm trees and a pretty promenade. Whoosing waves making for an adventurous swimming experience. 5. Playa de las Teresitas near San Andres, North Tenerife. The beach of choice for Santa Cruz residents, Teresitas is one of the most beautiful manmade beaches on the planet! 6. Joint six are the beaches at top Lanzarote resort hotspots Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen. Both have numerous beaches, many of which are blue flag. Top family amenities too. 7. The best urban beach on the Canaries is to be found alongside Gran Canaria's capital Las Palmas - it's Playa de las Canteras. 8. Back to Fuerteventura, and to the north the stunning beaches of Corralejo to the north are flanked by a sand dune national park. 9. El Medano, Tenerife - pretty cove beaches and excellent kite surfing and windsurfing conditions. 10. Costa Adeje, Tenerife - top of the charts for sheltered family beaches, lively too with plenty of watersports and resort amenities close to hand.
