Places of interest in Costa Adeje - Tenerife

La Caleta -  Costa Adeje

La Caleta is a small quiet fishing village and resort, with a few bars and restaurants. The two main roads from caleta soon head inland, rather than run along the coast. But you can have a pleasant and scenic walk by heading to Playa de las Americas, along the coast. You have a maintained path in this direction to the next resort, Playa del Duque. The path goes all the way to Los cristianos if you wish to continue.  La Caleta has a small selection of bars & restaurants with some excellent fish restaurants. Many of the bars & restaurants are located right on the sea front with majestic views across the bay or out to sea

Puerto Colon - Costa Adeje

Puerto Colon is a pleasant walk from Playa de las Americas (Veronicas) 1.2 km, or from Playa del Duque 1.5 km in the other direction. There are plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants, and ice cream stalls on route to keep you refreshed.     The harbour is well worth a visit, and look for the very unusual statue near the road just above the harbour.  Puerto Colon harbour is also the mooring and departure point for many of the tour operators day trips that offer visitors the opportunity to see the whale and dolphins colonies that live in the deep Atlantic waters between Tenerife and La Gomera. Without a doubt, the most impressive boats operating these trips are the fleet of five Freebird, catamarans, which are also available for both private and corporate charter through their web site. There are bars and Cafes on the first floor of the Puerto Colon Commercial centre which is located just to the Torviscas side of the harbour. Being on the first floor there is a good view of both the harbour entrance and the beach.

Playa del Duque - Costa Adeje

Among two not large cliffs is situated a most beautiful resort of Playa del Duque.   Playa del Duque is located 3.5 km to the North west of Playa de las Americas with Playa de Fanabe, Toriviscas and Puerto de Colon in between. A pleasant sea front promenade is available for most of this sea front.  Surrounded with snug little cafes and looming in the distance are the tops of mountains. In spite of the slight distances from Playa de Las Americas (5 minutes with car), this beach is very different from others. The water here has its own colour, it is sapphire - emerald - and not as usual transparent. Part of this beach is artificially brought, but the second part is natural. Lots of pretty shells can be found in the sand.  The water is great for visitors that like the waves and there is also a  quieter part for families with children.  In the other direction a trail along the front leads to the next town, La Caleta 30 km south of Los Gigantes.  It is a well-maintained, newly built resort with easy access to all surrounding areas. It has a quieter and more reserved atmosphere than other resorts in Tenerife and is also very good for watersports. You can easily get into Playa de las Americas by bus when you want to sample the local nightlife. There's a good selection of shops in two local shopping centres, CC Plaza del Duque and CC El Duque. This is a much quieter area than nearby Playa de las Americas, but a selection of bars and restaurants, some quiet classy, are available.

Playa de Fanabe - Costa Adeje

Fanabe beach is a new, developing area, yellow sand beach, showers, sun beds and shades, water-sports, south Tenerife.  The neighbouring beaches of Torviscas and Fañabé make up one long, sandy beach. The sea is mainly calm. These beaches offer a complete range of facilities and a great atmosphere of non-stop fun. They are joined by one long, popular promenade where many people relax and enjoy the beautiful sunshine at some of the best-known beaches in Tenerife.

Costa Adeje Heritage

Adeje presents an important archaeological and architectural area in southern Tenerife, and of particular note are the funeral caves linked to Tenerife's original inhabitants, the mysterious Guanches. Set in shelves along the Precipice of Hell, these motley reminders of an ancient civilisation are fast becoming a major tourist attraction. The historical heritage of the municipality of Adeje provides us with a few places of interest, among which we would suggest were worth viewing are :- The church of the Convent of Nuestra Senora de Guadlupe and San Pablo, Santa Ursula Church and The Public Achive Lirbary of la Villa de  Adeje.  It is worth highlighting other places in the municipality that , although they are not open to the public, have had an important relevance to the history of Adeje, like La Casa Fuerte and the Hydraulic watermill, both near the entrance to Barranco del infierno.

Costa Adeje Golf

Two championship level golf courses complete the range of leisure activities on offer in the area.  Playing at Golf Costa Adeje, one of the main courses in Tenerife becomes a unique experience thanks to the climate of this part of the island. Golf Costa Adeje is surprising because it is superbly adapted to its surroundings. Pepe Gancedo designed an unusual layout respecting the old farm terraces that slope down to the sea framed by the original dry stone walls. With really beautiful views of the ocean, the island of La Gomera and the rugged Adeje mountains, this unique golf course features 27 holes on wide greens and obstacles such as gorges and lakes. The pleasant and spacious Club House has large terraces and a central courtyard. An unusual feature is the lift which takes you down to the driving range in your buggy.  The internationally acclaimed course Golf Costa Adeje is surely one of the premier European golf destinations. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, and built on a former banana plantation with breathtaking views of Mount Teide, this demanding course consists of six par 5's, six par 4's and six par 3's. Starting inland, the course heads out to the shimmering Atlantic Ocean and views of the neighbouring island La Gomera before turning back towards the stunning mountain range. Make no mistake, this course is a fantastic challenge and in 2002 hosted the Spanish Open. So book your tee off time now, follow in the footsteps of Sergio Garcia and Seve Ballesteros, and enjoy a week of the best golf Europe has to offer.

Shopping in Costa Adeje

The Commercial Centre offers a variety of shops, and for the shopaholic, then Las Amercias is very close where a huge array of shops await you. R egular markets are also held every Thursday and Saturday morning throughout the year in front of the Hotel Esmeralda in the Torviscas district.

Ravine Barranco del Infieno - Costa Adeje

For those visitors who venture beyond the resort and inland to the old town of Adeje, there is a completely different side of Tenerife waiting to be discovered. A short distance from the centre of the town is the impressive "Barranco del Infierno", which translates into English as either Hell's Gorge or Hell's Ravine. This ravine is not only the deepest in Tenerife, but throughout all of the Canary Islands.  It is a dry gorge ending in a waterfall. Public access to the gorge, which has now been afforded special environmental protection, is restricted to a maximum of 200 people per day, therefore to avoid disappointment it is strongly recommended that you pre-reserve your place in advance. This can either be done by either phoning their information offices on +34 922 782 885.  Admission to the gorge is very reasonable for adults and children under 12 go free. You should reasonably allow around 4 hours to complete the 16km walk, and clearly you will need strong footwear along with some additional warm clothing.
