Tourist Information about the Costa del Sol - Helping you choose the perfect holiday in Spain

The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and has been a favourite holiday destination for Europeans for many years.  It has a fantastic selection of holiday resorts on offer, many of which are extremely high quality and have been presented with 5 star status. The Costa del Sol stretches along just over 150 kilometres of Málaga province and is one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations. The area's mild climate is the main attraction that makes it possible to enjoy the beaches and a wide variety of outdoor activities year round.

With the Costa del Sol weather giving average annual temperatures of 18ºC and over 300 days of sunshine per year it isn't difficult to understand why it is one of Europe's top holiday destinations. There are around 70 Costa del Sol golf courses on the "Costa del Golf" which can be played all year round as well as a whole range of other activities available such as sailing, scuba diving, horse riding, dolphin safaris, etc. The list is endless. Away from the coast there are numerous excursions into the real Spain with the cities of Ronda Seville, Cordoba and Granada all accessible for day tours. For the more adventurous you can also take a 15km trip across the Straits of Gibraltar to visit Tangier in Morocco. Malaga is the stepping stone to the Costa del Sol. Relatively few visitors visit the city as they rush from the airport to their holiday resort. In doing so they miss a gem of a city with a fascinating old quarter next to a Roman theatre and Moorish palace, a commercial centre with first class shopping and a vibrant social life. Marbella is famous as a playground of the rich and famous, Marbella is now accessible to many who swarm south to enjoy the Spanish sunshine and the world class golf courses of the Costa del Golf. Mijas Pueblo stands high up the mountain above the coastal resorts and is a popular ½ day excursion from the Costa del Sol whilst Mijas Costa is the resort on the coast below which attracts mass tourism to its many attractions. During the 1950s and 60s Torremolinos was converted from a quaint fishing village into the Costa del Sol's original tourist resort.  Today it is a concrete jungle but with fine beaches and ample accommodation it has plenty to offer. Lying a short distance south west of Malaga airport between the famous resorts of Torremolinos and Fuengirola, Benalmadena has plenty to offer the whole spectrum of visitor types. The third major high rise resort heading south from Malaga, Fuengirola is especially popular with British tourists of all ages especially families and middle aged groups. Estepona is the most westerly resort of the Costa del Sol.  It has avoided too many of the high rise blocks of many of the other resorts and is an ideal choice for those people looking for a quiet holiday. Nerja is the most easterly resort of the Costa del Sol which still somehow maintains a reputation as a quaint village.  This is no longer the case as the inevitable tourist developments have transformed the town into a thriving resort but without the high rise excesses of the western Costa del Sol. Sotogrande marina is the first port of call for yachts entering the Mediterranean. It is also home to two of Europe's finest golf courses including Valderrama.

Weather in the Costa del Sol

 The Costa del Sol weather is exactly what you would expect from the name "Sunny Coast", sun, sun and more sun. It is one of the best, most reliable and healthiest climates in the world with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. In the winter months the climate is temperate with average daytime temperatures of about 16ºC. There can be some rainy days during this period but when tends to vary from year to year and it seldom lasts more than a few days. It is a perfect climate during these months for playing golf. At the height of the summer in July and August the daytime temperatures reach about 30ºC and there is no rain - perhaps there may be one or two summer storms but nothing that will last too long.

Golf in the Costa del Sol

For anyone interested in a golfing holiday, Costa del Sol must be your first choice. The Costa del Sol has the largest concentration of golf courses that exist in Europe, in the smallest space between Rincón de la Victoria and Sotogrande. There are 40 golf courses which form an unprecedented rich tourist heritage for they are a high quality collection and many of them are considered to be the best in the world. In fact, the Costa del Golf has acquired a spectacular development in the last decade, and the existent prospects are of a moderate growth for the next years, above all if the projects are fulfilled in some areas of the eastern coast such as in Nerja and Torrox. Now, the municipalities which have this type of installation are Rincón de la Victoria, Malaga, Benalmádena, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Benahavís, Manilva, and inland of the province, at a stones throw from the coast, there is Alhaurín el Grande, and Alhaurín de la Torre. To the 36 golf courses corresponding to Malaga, there are also four in the province of Cadiz but which form part of the tourist unit based on golf, and they are La Alcaidesa, Sotogrande, San Roque Club, and Valderrama, the course par excellence, where the Ryder Cup will be challenged for the first time outside of the United States or the British Isles.
