About the area around Benissa |
|
Benissa Old Town. The historic centre of Benissa still shows it's medieval character with narrow cobbled streets, wrought iron grills and heraldic shields. The "La Lonja de Contratación" dates from the 16th century with it's heavy stone arches and pillars and is now a cultural centre hosting visiting artists and musicians. The attractive Palacio (town house) of the Torres-Orduña family is now a library and exhibition centre. Benissa's long association with the Franciscan religious order is represented by their convent that dates from 1645, the Seminary and the Church of La Purissima Xiqueta, completed in 1929 in Neo-Gothic style and known as the "Cathedral of the Marina Alta" due to it's impressive dimensions. It dominates Benissa's town square with it's palms and ficus trees and popular children's play area. The Benissa coastline at Les Basetes looking over to Calpe Rock (the Peñon de Ifach). Les Basetes harbour is a short distance along towards Calpe, located under some low cliffs and with access from the Calpe-Moraira coast road. It has a restaurant, sailing and diving school. Benissa has recently made a pathway that winds along the cliffs and bays of their municipality giving great sea views and easier access to the water. The photo shows the path on each side of La Fustera beach. The beach itself is a natural sand blue flag beach that offers sunbed rental, children's games and a red cross cabin in summer. Cala dels Pinets (the Bay of the Pines) is the next bay along in the Moraira direction. It is overlooked by villas an bungalows and like the rest of this coast it is visited by divers and nature lovers. Cala de La Lobella. The whole coast here is covered by the "Ley de Costas", a law that has stopped building on the sea front. The happy result is that the coast has kept it's look of a Mediterranean shoreline with rocky outcrops and bays interspersed with small pinewoods. Cala de l'Advocat. The Cala de l'Advocat is situated under steep cliffs but can be reached by car and has a parking area with an old jetty. At one time the Cala was a source of the special limestone used in the buildings of Benissa old town. Cala Baladrar is towards Teulada-Moraira and is the last bay before Cap Blanc. A long pebble beach with a small parking area is faced by gardens and villas and in summer there's (sometimes) a beach bar. |
