Funchal is the capital of Madeira and is a popular destination for tourists. It is a modern westernised city, with many restaurants, coffee bars and art galleries. Easily reached now via the motorway running along the southern coast of the island from Madeira's Airport. There are many beautifully kept parks with colourful flowers in abundance. Pleasure boats leave from Funchal Harbour on a regular basis, with Whale and Dolphin watching being extremely popular. Funchal is a character capital, with a compact centre easily explored on foot. A host of attractions including castles, convents, botanical and tropical gardens, numerous museums and a cable car ride up into the hills. It's quite possible to see a large part of Madeira from Funchal, with the cable car taking you inland and up to historic Monte Visit Funchal Marina for Sailing, Diving and Water sports and there is a superb choice of golf courses around Funchal. There is an annual Carnival, which lasts for several days. Many colourful floats and the jolly crowds give a good-natured carnival atmosphere. There is a massive and incredible firework display at Christmas, the Christmas lights are probably one of the best displays in the world.
