Famous for the Ta’Pinu Sanctuary, which is still an official place of pilgrimage today, Ghammar sits amongst beautiful open countryside, and next door to quaint villages with plenty of local charm and atmosphere. The hamlet of Ghammar is home to many traditional old stone farmhouses, which, now resorted and updated, serve as holiday accommodation for those who come to experience the beauty and tranquility that Gozo offers. The quaint hamlet of Ghammar is most famous for being the home of Maltas’ shrine to the Virgin Mary, Ta’Pinu. In the late 19th century, a local peasant woman was said to have been visited by Mary, and apparently many miracles have been witnessed there since. The limestone structure is now an official Vatican place of pilgrimage, and attracts Catholics from all over the world. Just outside Ghammar is the smallest village on Gozo, Ghasri, which has retained its’ old-world charm, and is the site of the first lighthouse to be built on the island. Ta’Gordan was constructed a century ago and is still in operation today, with the upper deck offering stunning views of the entire north coast. Ghasri is home to a tiny pebbly beach, Wied Il-Ghasri; however the larger resort of Dwejra lies just around the coastline. Here, visitors can experience some of the best diving in the Mediterranean, and marvel at the magnificent Fungus Rock and Azure Window, whilst swimming in the clear turquoise waters. Ghammar is surrounded by beautiful countryside filled with hills and valleys, making it ideal for scenic walks and bike-rides. Just outside Ghammar is the attractive village of Gharb, with its’ much photographed village square and quaint old houses with traditional stone carved balconies, and a small amount of shops and restaurants. Most of the restaurants and shops can be found it the capital, Victoria, although the small villages are a great place to browse the locally made handicrafts, such as lace, sweaters and glassware.
