Golf in the Costa Brava

Costa Brava is one of the prime tourist regions of Europe. Its popularity comes from the quality of the region's resorts, their facilities, the natural and cultural attractions of the area. It now offers unsurpassable facilities for golf enthusiasts, for practice throughout the year thanks to the kindliness of the climate. Possessing a long golfing tradition (the first course was created in 1914), this region of Spain now provides 26 golf courses. Most of the courses are located along the extensive mediterranean coast (Costa Brava, Costa del Maresme, Garraf, Costa Daurada), in the vicinities of Barcelona (Vallés, Baix Llobregat, Osona), or up the foot of the great Pyrenean mountain range (Cerdaña, Ripollés).

Costa Brava itself has become host to nine excellent golf courses (not a bad one amongst them) four of which are some of the best in Europe.

Emporda Golf Course (Nr, Estartit) - Opened in 1991, Emporda is now fully-established among Europe’s finest top 50 courses. American in style, three contrasting loops of nine holes start with an outstanding links, followed by two superb forest courses. Emporda really is magnificent and enjoyable. The Green nine is very different to the Blue and Gold, being completely treeless with a links feel. 10ft pyramid mounds and desert sand bunkers line most fairways. Water features prominently on many holes. The signature 9th hole has a huge 40 ft island green protected by a menacing lake. When the wind blows, this exposed Green nine can be very challenging. The Blue and Gold nines are similar to each other, both winding through forests. Awesome 150ft pine trees that look like giant chimney-sweep brushes line the fairways, with serpentine twists running through the nine. The course is nearly always in superb condition. A further 9 holes are currently being built, extending Emporda to a 36-hole complex. The course is now host to the final PGA European Tour Qualifying School in conjunction with Pals. Emporda golf resort is up there with the very best, and is a must play during your stay.

PGA Catalunya Golf Course (Girona) - This course is the realisation of a dream. Back in 1987 the PGA European Tour wanted to build its own Players Championship course on a par with US PGA Tour’s Sawgrass course. After 10 years of planning and re-development PGA Catalunya was born on July 2000. The course can only be described as magnificent. Built in the Girona mountains, it has beautiful green fir, scrub and purple heather lining most fairways. The fairways and greens are American stadium in design with water hazards and boarded island greens. Already a new entry into Europe’s top 10 courses, PGA Catalunya is certain to rise into the top five or even higher in the near future. This course is the ultimate challenge, and is a must for those who like to play the great courses. We are grateful to the PGA Catalunya to allow our holidaymakers the opportunity to do so. With its excellent location just off junction 8 on the A7 Autopista it’s easy to get to from both Barcelona & Girona airports.

Girona Golf Course - Opened in 1991 this underrated golf course was designed by the renowned Fred Hawtree. Situated up in the Girona mountains only 5 minutes from the city centre of Girona. The course features sweeping valleys of forest pines and umbrella trees, with mostly elevated tee positions. The scenery is beautiful, with mountain backdrops and hills which make the course really testing, as well as very pretty. Water is present on three holes but the course’s hazards are mainly in the sloping lies, trees, tight doglegs and ravines. The clubhouse is huge, with three tiers. From the balcony when the sun is setting, there’s a breathtaking panoramic view of the distant mountain tops in their splendour. The course is normally in great condition with fast undulating greens, and is very enjoyable to play.

Pals Golf Course - Established in 1966, Pals is one of Spain’s finest courses and has held numerous national and European events including the Spanish Open, Catalan Open, Spanish amateur and other professional championships. The course is set in a forest of umbrella pines that runs very close to Pals beach. Narrow tree-lined fairways and doglegs are the features of this superb and testing course. Pals is one of the few courses in Spain with a par 73, due to the fact that it has 3 par 5's on the back nine. Without doubt Pals is one of the best golf courses in Spain.

Mas Nou (d'Aro) Golf Course - Built in 1992 this amazing course has been ranked in the top three in Europe and is one of the spectacular tests of golf anywhere. This course has literally been built by slicing off the very top of a mountain. Make sure you bring plenty of golf balls with you! Its superb location offers magnificent panoramic views overlooking the town of Platja d’Aro. The course is surrounded by cork oaks, pines and over a thousand olive trees, with two big artificial lakes which make the course even more charming.

Serres de Pals Golf Course - This newly-built championship course opened in October 2000, completing what the locals call the Golden Triangle of golf courses: Emporda, Pals and Serres de Pals. The course has been constructed on the local rice fields and is quite different from most of the others in the region. It lies on the typical flattish rolling farmland countryside of the Baix Emporda, with few trees. Strategic doglegs frequent many holes on this course, so placement of your tee shots is paramount. When you enter through a path in the hedgerow, you come to the 14th, 15th and 16th holes, which could easily be mistaken for a typical Floridian golf course on the swamps. Free trollies are included in your green fee.

Costa Brava Golf Course - Near Playa d’Aro in Santa Christina a gentle par 70. Designed in 1968, along with Pals this is one the oldest courses in the Costa Brava. Not surprisingly it is similar to Pals, surrounded by pines and cork oaks, with flat terrain and wide fairways. It differs from Pals in that it is a much shorter course and not as tight. The Costa Brava is a private club, but green fees are welcome the whole year. Please note in July & August the club takes reservations one week in advance.

Peralada Golf Course (Nr. Figueres) - Peralada is an open course on flattish terrain. The design is resort-style and small olive trees line most of the fairways. This course is nearly always in excellent condition and when the greens are cut down for competitions, they can be devilishly fast. Peralada is an enjoyable course that has been considered by the PGA European Tour to be good enough to host one of their annual Pre-Qualifying Schools. In summary, this whole golf complex is 5 star and caters for golfers who seek high quality.

Torremirona (Nr Figueres) - Situated four miles west of Figueres, near the village of Navata. Torremirona is set in beautiful rolling countryside with panoramic views overlooking the snow-capped mountains of the Pyrenees. Torremirona has been constructed as an “American resort style course” with big greens surrounded by beautifully constructed bunkers. This course will particularly suit the mid to high handicapper as the course is not as demanding as PGA Catalaunya or Mas Nou. It is immaculately maintained. Similar to Peralada GC it has few trees, with more of an open landscape. Torremirona is a top quality resort. The hotel, villas, restaurant, spa, superb golf course and practice facilities have all been constructed to the very highest standards. A day’s golfing here is sure to be most enjoyable.
