Gran Canaria is part of the Archipelago of seven main Canary Islands, basking in the Atlantic Ocean, just 210 km off the coast of Africa and 1250 km away from mainland Spain. With an area of 592 square miles, Gran Canaria is almost circular in shape - best described as a square with the corners rounded off. The mountainous terrain of the island is due to its volcanic origin, although there are no longer any active volcanoes on Gran Canaria.

The main industries of the island are tourism, fishing and fruit and vegetable growing. This jewel in the Ocean offers an all year round climate, ideal for all kinds of holiday-makers. There's lots to do during the day and a much varied nightlife scene.

Once you have discovered the beautiful island of Gran Canaria, the capital city of Las Palmas located on the most northern point is a "must" on your list of places to visit. The city is easily accessible by the extremely clean and efficient bus service from all parts of the island. From the Parque Santa Catalina in Las Palmas, take the yellow open-topped Tourist Tour Bus to see the many attractions the city has to offer.

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), but despite it's small size, the island is often described as being like a Continent in Miniature. The Dry South contrasts with the Green Pine Forests of the Mountainous interior and it is not unusual for there to be snow on the peaks while Holidaymakers are sunbathing on the beaches below.

The beaches at Maspalomas are amongst the best in the islands and resort of Playa de Ingles offers some very lively nightlife. If you don't want to spend your nights in a Disco Bar and your days on the Beach, Gran Canaria also offers excellent golfing with 6 Golf Courses and a long tradition of the sport on the island.

The island's capital, Las Palmas, dates back to the 15th century and with a population of nearly 400,000 is by far the biggest city in the islands. The colonial architecture, shopping, bars and restaurants make this city well worth a visit.
