Puerto del Carmen is nestled on the coast in the southern central part of the island, it is only a 10 minute drive from Arrecife Airport and is a convenient place from which to explore the rest of the island. Like many places in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen was originally a small fishing village, and the old harbour is still a delightful place to visit, boasting some excellent seafood restaurants. Although the resort has grown over the last twenty year, it now stretches along the whole 6 kilometres of golden sandy beaches the town has been saved from the high-rise buildings that blight so many other destinations due to the strict planning restrictions. The 6 kilometre stretch of golden beaches washed by the waters of the Atlantic should be enough to tempt you. All of the beaches fly the Blue Flag awarded by the EEC for cleanliness and lack of contamination. The surrounding waters are considered to be some of the most tranquil in the Canary Islands, they are excellent for Swimming and other water sports. There are a number of diving schools and windsurfing centres in Puerto del Carmen. There are a wealth of shopping opportunities available, whether you want to peruse the tourist offerings of the main Beach Avenue or fancy something a bit more upmarket in the new Biosfera shopping complex. There are well over 100 restaurants on the Avenida de Las Playas alone, with menus to suit all tastes and budgets. The end of July signals the Fiesta de Carmen, patron saint of Puerto del Carmen. Specially decorated fishing boats setting out to sea, to pray for good catches in the coming year, signals the end of this particular fiesta. Playa Blanca is the most southerly resort on the Island of Lanzarote, it is approximately 37 kilometres from the Island’s Capital Arrecife and some 33 kilometres from the airport. Playa Blanca is a developing resort and is very popular with families. There have recetly been a large increase in luxury villa developments in Playa Blanca, which really add to its appeal as it now offers excellent holiday accommodation as well as superb weather and beaches. The promenade is wonderful as it links both sides of the resort. It allows you to make the most of the seafront sites of Playa Blanca as well as spectacular Ocean views across the Bocaina Straits to Fuerteventura. The coastline around Playa Blanca is essentially one large 9 kilometre wide bay which is then broken up into three smaller, but still large, bays. This means that the beaches in and around Playa Blanca are sheltered and ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Playa Blanca has all the normal tourist shops that you would imagine in the centre and along the central part of the beach promenade, if you want a more upmarket style of shopping experience, then the new Marina Rubicon is rapidly becoming the place to go. There are some good seafood restaurants on the beach promenade overlooking the central Playa Blanca beach and out over the Atlantic across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. In the Marina Rubicon, the new Casa Roja is highly recommended, it has been well decorated in a style that leaves you wondering if it hasn’t been there a lot longer than the couple of years that the Marina has been in existence. Puerto Calero is situated on the South-West coast of Lanzarote, Puerto Calero is only 10 kilometres from Arrecife Airport and 20km from the islands capital. Its location is ideal being sheltered from the island’s Prevalent North-Easterly winds. The neighbouring island of Fuerteventura and the mountain range forming the coast of Punta Gorda also give protection from the strong waves rolling in from the Atlantic and the less common South-Westerly winds. The Marina is a great place to wander, look at the fabulous boats and generally soak up a bit of the luxury atmosphere that permeates the whole place. Puerto Calero is the base for a number of water based activites, such as the Catlanza catamaran trips, Submarine excursions and a variety of sport-fishing boats which allow you to try your skill at landing Marlin and Blue-fin Tuna. There are also dive schools operating out of the Marina who offer instruction and guided dives from beginner through to advanced levels. The array of shops in Puerto Calero is not vast, but you will find some very nice boutiques alongside souvenir shops which are more upmarket than in the other resorts of Lanzarote. Costa Teguise is situated on the coast in the central part of the island, Costa Teguise is one of Lanzarote’s main tourist resorts. Costa Teguise is well served for beaches with some fine golden sand. Windsurfing, is a major pastime in Costa Teguise with visitors and residents alike. There are windsurfing schools, shops and equipment rental companies clustered around the beach at Las Cucharas. Most levels of experience are catered for, from Absolute beginners upwards. Costa Teguise has a wonderful 18 hole golf course. If you are on a self-catering holiday, there are plenty of smaller supermarkets within the resort. These stores generally stock a good range of international produce. Costa Teguise nightlife could be classed as lively but not rowdy. Restaurants are open until late and there is a good selection of bars, both British and local style, in the resort. Costa Teguise is only a 20 minute drive from Arrecife Airport and is a convenient place from which to explore the islands tourist attractions as well as the northern fishing villages of Arrieta and Orzola. Tias overlooks the main resort of Puerto del Carmen and is a growing destination in it’s own right. The resort of Tias accounts for some 70% of all tourist activity on Lanzarote, making Tias arguably the most important and the most affluent town on the whole island. The town offers easy airport access minus the aircraft noise, enjoys a central island location and boasts good local facilities such as supermarkets and interesting shops. Tias retains an authentic Spanish feel and boasts a number of more discreet attractions; such as the beautiful Church of Candelaria. Tias is an important cultural centre on the island, with the local Municipal Theatre playing host on a regular basis to a wide array of attractions; from traditional folklore events through to modern jazz concerts. There’s also a good selection of local bars and restaurants to choose from. June is an excellent time to visit Tias, as fiestas flare throughout the month. Oasis de Nazaret is a 10 minute drive from the nearest coastal resort of Costa Teguise, and 15 minutes from Famara, which boasts the longest natural beach in Lanzarote and has become renowned for its incredible surfing. The village is nestled alongside Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote. This sleepy and typically Canarian town is home to a wonderful selection of restaurants, gift shops and art galleries; not forgetting the lively Sunday Market. Nazaret is home to the famous LagOmar restaurant which once belonged to Omar Sharif. It is built into the volcanic hillside and here you can experience fantastic gourmet dining in a beautiful setting, or have a drink in the bar which occasionally hosts live jazz music. Alternatively you may prefer the very Spanish ‘sociedad’ where you will mix with the locals and enjoy excellent food at extremely reasonable prices. A new restaurant has recently opened which provides yet another insight into Canarian cuisine, and offers the perfect setting for al fresco dining and romantic ambience. There is a beautifully landscaped golf course just a 5 minute drive away. Golf in Lanzarote Lanzarote presently has one 18 hole golf course but there is a further golf course under construction which may be completed by the end of 2008. Click here to learn more about Golf in Lanzarote Weather in Lanzarote The Average temperatures are 21˚C in the coldest months (January and February) and 31˚C in the summer. Flights to Lanzarote Lanzarote's international airport, Arrecife Airport receives flights from most airlines on a regular basis.
