Playa de Las Americas is one of the most popular tourist areas in Tenerife. Located at the island’s south-western extreme, it offers fabulous sandy beaches and a modern holiday infrastructure. It tends to be very popular particularly with the younger generation.  Playa de Las Americas is a purpose built resort, started in the 1960's and designed to have everything you require, such as bars, beaches, nightlife, restaurants and shops, near to your hotel or apartment. The largest resort in Southern Tenerife.  Beaches, bars and fabulous hotels,  Playa de las Americas has got it all. Cram your days full of jet ski rides, beach volleyball and beach games. . And fill your nights with karaoke, cocktails and cabaret. Away from the sand there are water parks, spas and even a casino to keep you fully occupied, you certainly will not be bored.

                 

Most of the beaches tend to be man made and are protected from erosion by breakwaters making the coast effectively a series of small protected coves. In Las Americas, Playa de Troja I-II and Playa de Fañabe have been awarded with blue flags, official symbol of optimal beaches in the European Union.  The beaches are linked by a long promenade, which winds along the busy waterfront, backed by dozens of high-rise hotels and holiday apartment blocks. A mini train runs around the resort stopping at scheduled points every hour, and there are plenty of free buses to assist visitors in getting around to make the most of the entertainment venues, shops and sports facilities that abound.   This area of Tenerife is where you will find most of the available water activities including surfing, jet-skiing, hang-gliding paracending, diving, snorkelling, and windsurfing.

Playa de Las Americas has a very warm weather climate the whole year as it is surrounded and protected by the Teide mountain and boasts an array of world class facilities, with its selection of beautiful, sandy beaches, cafés and bars to its venues offering live entertainment and cabaret everyday.

There are plenty of places to eat with varied cuisines to suit every national palate from fish and chips to excellent local cuisine.  You will love or hate this very popular resort, with its English breakfast at noon, sunbathe and swim all afternoon, drink and dance all night culture.

  The main tourist resort in the south of Tenerife is certifiably crazy and just waiting to pounce on the unwary tourist! Whatever you want Las Americas offers it all to you with a sunny smile and a glass of your favourite tipple! Warning: If you are seeking peace and quiet, Las Americas isn't for you. Las Americas is big and just keeps expanding. It now includes several areas like San Eugenio, Fañabe, Costa Adeje, Porto Colom and Torviscas, which are all bustling mini-resorts in their own right. Playa de Las Americas is situated at the southern end of the west coast where the climate is arguably one of the best on the whole island with some of the best beaches in Tenerife, all of which meet European Commission cleanliness standards. The waters off Las Americas' beaches are warm, generally calm and safe, with breakwaters constructed to ensure safety in all but the most adverse weather conditions which, thankfully, are rare. Las Americas is a tourist haven pure and simple, with no pretensions to be anything else. It is geared to fun, fun, fun all the way. And what's wrong with that?  Playa de Las Americas started life around 30 years ago as a handful of hotels around a man-made beach with sand imported from the Sahara. Since then, it's grown to be one of the largest holiday resorts in Europe.  The resort is now crammed with shopping malls, shops selling electrical appliances, beachwear, sports kit, leather goods, souvenirs and much more, some of the best include Parque Santiago, San Eugenio and Fañabé.

Las Americas  Beaches

Playa de Las Americas beaches   -  Tenerife’s sand is naturally black but there are a number of beaches created with imported Saharan sand including Playa de las Americas beaches. The beaches are popular and the water sports on offer are brilliant. Las Vistas beach is one of the largest beaches in Tenerife.  You'll always find a bathing spot here and the bay like cove makes the water calm and extremely safe for swimming. There is a fountain and diving platform in the sea for you to make use of.  The next beach is La Troya beach, also known as Veronica’s beach due to its location next to the Veronicas strip. It’s the second largest beach in Las Americas and hosts some more relaxing water sports such as Pedalo's. Next is Puerto Colon beach and marina. This is located next to the Las Americas marina where all the normal boat trips depart from. This beach is pretty small but has the attraction of anchored inflatables in the sea for the young and old to play on. Finally we reach Fanabe beach. This is located in the more upmarket area of Las Americas and outsize’s its neighbour by a long way. There’s an abundance of parasols and sun loungers so head here if you want a little more relaxation and nicer surroundings.  Good surfing beaches include La Troya, Conquistador and Fatenia at Playa de las AmericasYou will find fabulous beaches here of fine golden sand flanked by bars, shops and restaurants. You can jet ski, water ski, surf, hire a pedalos and banana boats.  

Las Americas  Nightlife

Some of the most famous nightclubs and discothèques in Tenerife are in Playa De Las Americas.  The most famous nightclubs in Tenerife are situated at Veronicas, Playa De Las Americas. This is where the famous DJ’s from around the world come and play. The nightclubs and discos have a wide variety of music from your 80’s, Top 40 all the way to your groovy R&B clubs. You’d never get bored!   The main nightclub areas usually wake up around 10pm, and with many of the bars providing live entertainment shows  With more nightclubs than some British cities, Las Americas is a honey pot for those looking for more of a nocturnal holiday. The area known as The Patch is the best place to start the evening; there is a fine choice of nightspots and most have a happy hour or two. The most popular are Rags and Linekers - all dance bars which play a good mix of Pop, R&B, Dance and 80s party music. Many of the bars have good live music, often with impersonators. Later on the Veronicas complex and the Starco Commercial Centre are the places to head to, or avoid. Well-known clubs here include Cream and the Ministry of Sound, but note that they are not affiliated with their UK counterparts. Bobby's and Busby's are good options for those into RnB and Garage, as is Tramps - the largest club on the island. There are also two casinos at the resort.  There are also shows you can go to in the area, usually bookable in advance and at some you will get a full meal included in the entry price. Shows such as the medieval night (knights, jousting, sword-fighting etc), the Spanish ballet and flamenco extravaganzas, a classy soul and Motown night with excellent American singers, are just some of the attractions available.

Activities 

There are a wealth of activities and excursions on offer.  Leaving  from the harbour area, there are many fishing trips, pleasure cruises, glass bottomed boats, diving excursions and ferries to La Gomera.  The coastline is very pretty and walking is a very pleasant pastime. The beach area offers a wealth of leisure activities including surfing, jet-skiing, hang-gliding, paracending, diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, catamarans, pedalos, banana boats  and so many more the list is endless.   Whale and dolphin trips are available.  Boat trips leave regularly and bottlenose dolphins and whales are often seen. The Sunday Flea Market is a good place to visit and a  good place to pick up crafts and souvenirs,  be prepared to haggle to obtain a better price.  Las Americas has entertainment for all ages including tennis courts, amusement arcades, bowling, water parks and go-carting. Bungee jumping can be done at the Sky Park and visitors can swim with dolphins at the Aqua Park. There is an 18-hole golf course on the way to Los Cristianos and horse and camel riding can be arranged nearby.  Other popular excursions include a trip to the capital, Santa Cruz, and to the Mount Teide National Park. The curved breakwater gives good protection to the small harbour, and an esplanade and pier make it a pleasant place for an evening stroll. Breakwaters have also been built close by to protect the beaches and should not be confused with the marina entrance

Restaurants

There are restaurants catering for every taste in Playa de las Americas - along the seafront are dozens of fast food stalls and restaurants advertising English breakfasts and Sky TV, but international dishes of all varieties are also offered including Indian, Chinese, some great pasta restaurants and, of course, excellent tapas and local Canary Islands cuisine. Many of the better restaurants are located in the Troviscas areas and in the neighbouring resort of Los Cristianos. There are also some nice restaurants overlooking the marina in Puerto Colon.

Shopping at Las Americas

There is a great amount of shops in Playa de Las Americas and visitors can indulge in duty-free delights in the numerous clothing shops electrical stores.   The supermarkets offers most of the well-known brands, many imported to cater for the British tourists. For the best choice take a taxi to the commercial centre in the San Eugene Centre, the other side of the motorway. Those in the mood for some haggling should go to the Torviscas Market (Thursday and Saturday from 9am); there are great bargains to be had and it's great for presents, but shoppers should get there early as it can get very crowded. A trip to Santa Cruz (one hour by bus) is worthwhile for those looking for designer clothes.

Puerto Colón

Puerto Colón, or Columbus' Port is well worth a visit.  It calls itself a port but it is actually a large and very attractive marina.  It is the town's main centre for boat/yacht excursions and fishing trips. As Las Américas has never had a working port, the boating marina at Puerto Colón is a modern, purpose-built harbour. Snuggled among Las Américas' many fine beaches, the marina is an eye-catching place where you can browse around the shops, then have a meal or drink while enjoying the view over the adjoining beach or over the yachts moored in the marina.  Without a doubt, the most impressive boats operating these trips are the fleet of 5 Freebird catamarans.   With its selection of clean sandy beaches, a wealth of sporting activities with some of the islands best facilities and a wide choice of chilled out and relaxing bars and restaurants to choose from, Puerto Colón in Tenerife is all set to be the islands next most popular resort.   A curved breakwater gives protection from the elements to the harbour and its variety of yachts, catamarans and boats which you can watch bobbing up and down in the gentle swell from one of the many Spanish style bars and restaurants that line the clean and well kept esplanade and pier. This is also the major marina where the majority of boat trips leave from for whale and dolphin watching, fishing or just a day cruising the waves. Tenerife is one of the top destinations in the world for big game fishing with Marlin, Tuna and Wahoo available within its coastal waters. A wide variety of different boats offering either full or half day trips are available to test your skills and luck, leave from Puerto Colón.  Another set of breakwaters protect a selection of relatively small but well maintained purpose built beaches where you can sunbath on the soft volcanic sand or if you are feeling a little more energetic, take advantage of the wealth of sporting activities available here such as volley ball, jet skiing, parascending, banana boats, hand gliding, diving, snorkelling, surfing and wind surfing among others.

Golf in Playa de Las Americas

The golf course in Playa de Las Americas is an 18-hole, par 62 course known as "Golf Las Americas".  The development also includes plush hotel and apartment complexes, which are currently under construction and will be another plus to the tourist boom in this area.  The Course was designed by the John Jacobs Golf Association and has wide bermuda grass fairways which run between multiple lakes an lush greenery. . All located in a natural, gently sloping mount with views towards Playa de las Américas and the sea.  Facilities include a Club house and Golf shop as well as practice greens and a driving range. It has already hosted the Spanish Ladies Open.  The course is sheltered from the wind by the surrounding hills, and enjoys calm, sunny days all year round. Amongst its many features, it offers a delightful series of lakes and ravines, which create a pleasant environment in which to enjoy your game. The architecturally pleasant clubhouse itself looks out on to the practice course, the first and tenth tees, and also the greens of the ninth and eighteenth holes. Services offered include a coffee bar, pro-shop, bag and club custody services as well as caddie cart hire and a golf school. It is advisable to make an early reservation as the course books up very quickly.

Las Americas Airport and Transport

Reina Sofia Airport in Tenerife is approximately 20-30 minutes from Los Cristianos by taxi. Cost approximately: 15 euro. Approximate Airport Coach Transfer time: 25-60 minutes.  This is the main tourist airport, and suitable for resorts such as Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Los Gigantes and Las Galletas and the other southern resorts.  There is an excellent tourist information office in the Airport, pick up you leaflets on your arrival.  Reina Sofia Airport is modern had has the usual airport facilities including a selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. Some in the departure lounge with views of the runway.  There is long and short term car parking.  Los Cristianos is just a 45 minute drive from the island’s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The town itself is best explored by foot, as it has a number of wheelchair friendly pedestrian walkways and a long beachfront promenade. Taxis are also inexpensive and readily available within the town.
