Lazio, a region of
central Italy, is split into 5 provinces; Latina, Rieti, Rome Province,
Viterbo and Frosinone. Despite being the most famous, the treasures of
Lazio are not confined to Rome, but are spread throughout the hundreds
of small towns and villages scattered across the hills and valleys of
Lazio. When in Lazio, most tourists have one goal: Rome. Holidays to
Rome and renting apartments in Rome, the Eternal City, let you see
more culture and heritage than in any other city I have had the
pleasure of visiting. The Colosseum, The Vatican, the Forum and the
Spanish Steps are a mere few of the most famous monuments in Rome.
However, Rome is not just a city for those with an interest in
history. Fashion or cuisine lovers also flock to Rome to sample the
best shopping Italy has to offer. Once you have finished sight seeing
and shopping in Rome, any holiday to Rome would be completed by a
short course in gladiatorial combat at the Colosseum.
The Latina Province is
the smallest of the Lazio provinces. It is a mountainous region,
characterised by borghi, (small medieval hill settlements), and much
of the beauty of the area lies in its natural uncontaminated
landscape. This makes Latina a favourite destination for artists and
walkers. Rieti is even more mountainous. The capital city, of the same
name, has some unique Roman architecture. The underwater Roman Bridge
is certainly worth marvelling at! Leonessa, is a little resort town
used both in summer and winter. In the summer it is an idyllic retreat
in the hills for walking, painting and to use as a base for discovery
of the province. In the winter however, it becomes a gateway to the
skiing in Italy on Mount Terminilla. Viterbo was an Etruscan
territory, and is therefore rich in historic sites like those at
Tarquinia, Vulci and Tuscania. The town itself is an elegant rich and
lively town, surrounded by extinct volcanic craters. Frosinone is
different again. Frosinone is rich in both archaeological and artistic
gems. Remains of Alatri and the Cyclopic Wall make fascinating
viewing, and there are fascinating tours of the Abbey of Montecassino.
