Lisbon Coast Region Resort Information The Lisbon Coast Region of the Algarve in Portugal offers a wide range of holiday resorts to suit all ages and budgets. The golden sandy beaches, pure Atlantic waters and the sharp coastal landscape with magnificent cliffs make the beaches around Praia das Macas a haven for fun and pleasure. Apart from the traditional bathing and swimming there are a lot of activities you can do on and around the beach. The Atlantic waves formed here attract a great number of local surfers, bodyboarders and skimmers, as well as the World Bodyboard and Surf Championships at Praia Grande and the World Windsurfing Competition at Gincho. The cliffs provide great jumping points for paragliding and all along the coast you can practice sports fishing and diving. Golf is available at several places less than half an hour driving distance such as the internationally aclaimed Penha Longa, Quinta da Beloura, and Quinta da Marinha courses. There are several courses around Sintra, of 6, 9 and 18 holes and these have been designed by aclaimed landscape designers. All levels of difficulty are present, up to the highest International competition level. The climate in this region allows for golfing to be available all year round. You can also go horse-riding, mountain-biking or hiking in the hills of Sintra. Situated on the west coast of Portugal, just north of Lisbon, Praia das Maçãs is only 12km from the exquisitely beautiful world heritage site town of Sintra. Sintra itself is a wonderland of fairy-tale castles, and icing-sugar palaces rising out of the foliage. Saunter along the forest trails to appreciate the astounding beauty of the surroundings, before touring the exuberant Palácio Nacional de Sintra (National Palace) and the bizarrely multicoloured Palácio de Pena (Pena Palace) where the kings and queens of Portugal used to retreat for the summer; and the romantic Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors). There is also easy access to Lisbon itself. The Bairro Alto, is the place to listen to fado, Lisbon’s soulful, home-grown music that is currently enjoying a revival as cool fadista Marisa takes the world music scene by storm. You’ll also find fado houses in Estoril, Cascais and other resorts, though the most authentic are in Lisbon. You will probably also hear the drums of Mozambique and the Cape Verde islands as you walk through the Alfama, reminders of Portugal’s maritime past when this small country commanded the sea route to the east, and ruled a vast empire. Don’t miss Lisbon’s newest quarter, the fizzing, unashamedly avant-garde Parque das Nações. In keeping with Lisbon’s maritime traditions, the main attraction is the huge Oceanarium, Europe’s largest aquarium. Estoril, glitzier, elegant Estoril with its famous casino, meanwhile, is basking in the reflected glory of having been Ian Fleming’s original inspiration for Casino Royale when, during World War II, he stalked the spies who gathered round the resort’s roulette tables. Since then, the resort has continued to be a playground for film stars and royalty, and has recently been spruced up with new roads, green spaces and sea-front promenades lines with grand hotels and smart apartment blocks. The fine-sanded beach is huge and shelves gently into the sea, which makes it an excellent place for families with small children. Further down the coast and you arrive at the lovely village of Cascais and its beautiful marina. Cascais has cobbled back streets and lanes reminiscent of the Alfama and is still a fishing port like Lisbon used to be before it grew into a great city thanks to its prime position on the Tagus estuary. Cascais’ narrow streets, squares and courtyards are almost impossibly quaint, dripping with sweet-smelling bougainvillea, plumbago and jasmine. This hugely popular village is swollen, but not overwhelmed, by tourists in the summer months. Crowds, particularly young couples, bask in the sun by day, then dance in the clubs till the early hours. However, fishermen still land the daily catch on glorious Praia da Ribeira and Praia da Rainha beaches.
