Monastir Tourist Information - Tunisia Originally built as a trading post by the Phoenicians and then taken over by the Romans under the name of Ruspina, Monastir became important again in the eighth century with the establishment of its fortified Ribat, an imposing defence against seafaring invaders. The family mausoleum of the former President Habib Bourguiba dominates the town. Its gold and green domes and gilt-tipped minarets are particularly beautiful at night, when illuminated. Most visitors stay in the resort of Skanes, which is about 6 miles from Monastir town centre and is ideal for relaxing beach holidays, with golden sands and excellent water sport facilities.
The prettiest place to eat is in the marina, particularly on a warm evening when the terraced restaurants come alive. Le Grille and The Captain both have a good reputation, in particular for their freshly caught fish. There are frequent Metro (light railway) to and from the airport from Monastir station located behind the medina. A tourist train also links the hotels in Skanes with central Monastir. Local taxis are inexpensive and readily available.
