The Portimao
Region of the Algarve

offers a wide range of
holiday resorts to suit all ages and budgets. Portimao
is a superb holiday resort and is well known for its
outstanding fish restaurants and shopping. The local firewater,
chicken piri-piri, homemade bread, cured ham and sausages from the
serra are the local specialities. In Portimao town centre the main hub
is Praca Manuel Teixeira Gomes (named after the Portuguese President
who granted Portimao city status in 1924) right next to the Riverside
promenade. Moving up from Portimao Harbour around Largo 1 de Dezembro,
the park area here is decorated with azulejo tiles. Historic sights of
interest include the Igreja Matriz church to the north on a high hill.
Note its 14th century Gothic portal - this survived the earthquake.
Portimao has an old town area around Largo da Barca. The
industrial centre specialises in boat building and the canning of tuna
and sardines. The neighbouring seaside resort of Praia da Rocha is
home to the town's famous beach. The Portimao coastline offers a wide
choice of beautiful beaches, many with stunning rock formations such
as Praia do Barranco das Canas at Alvor to the west of Portimao. A
marina has recently opened adjoining Praia da Rocha and adds the
fascinating sight of the many luxurious boats at anchor and a choice
of bars and restaurants. When approaching the town from the direction
of Faro there is a choice of two bridges to cross. The old bridge runs
along past the harbour and was built from the left over iron from the Eiffel
Tower. On the river front many different boat tours and deep
sea-fishing outings can be booked. They will also take you out to the
caves along the Algarvian coast, dolphin spotting at Ponta da Piedade,
or on a scenic trip from Portimao upriver to Silves.
In the Portimão area is
Armação de Pera with a small 18th Century fortress and a popular
location for tourists with its long sandy beach. The beach village of Alvor
is another popular tourist location. Pretty tiny fishing
town Alvor is a fishing hotspot. Still maintaining its village
character with its 16th Century Parish Church its narrow streets teem
with life in the tourist season. The village is well located facing a
natural lagoon opening onto the sea. There is a choice of a long open
sandy beach or a number of small coves tucked under the cliffs.
Peaceful estuary and wetland waters mingle with rugged rock formations
and beach bays to great effect on this stretch of the Algarve coast.
Around the Ria de Alvor estuary beaches such as Praia do Alvor Poenti
e Nascente (blue flag) are part of a wide sand barrier and waters are
extremely calm here. This area is also home to extensive wildlife from
migratory birds to numerous species of fish and molluscs. For
the golfers there are three championship courses all within a short
drive of the resort. Penina Golf Course is 4 km from Alvor, Alto Golf
Course is 2 km from Alvor & Quinta do Morgado Golf Course is just
inland from Portimao. Along with this there are a vast amount of golf
courses just a little further afield.
