The Tavira Region of the Algarve in Portugal offers a wide range of holiday resorts to suit all ages and budgets. If you want to escape the modern tourist resorts then Tavira is good choice with its fascinating architecture. Located 25kms from Faro and 20kms from Spain, it is probably the most elegant of the Algarvian towns. Often described as the Algarvian Rome or the Venice of Algarve, Tavira stands on two hills on either side of the River Gilao, the two sides of the town being linked by a seven-arch bridge. Tavira is known as the town of churches, since there are an amazing 22 churches and other places of worship within the town. It also has its own castle. The
nearest beach to Tavira lies past the salt pans and is reached by a
ferryboat that takes the visitor to the long attractive sandy-bar
island known as Ilha de Tavira. One of the best beaches along the
entire coast. Clean, safe bathing, protected by the
offshore sandbars is complimented by a few cafes and bars. Some
7kms of soft sand easily accommodates all the sun bathers,
swimmers, windsurfers and sailors, The location of Tavira, protected by its natural lagoon, offers tranquillity and the opportunity to observe nature and bird life at its best. Those with a car, have the opportunity to explore further delights. Within a few kilometres are some of the best golfing facilities in the Algarve, excellent restaurants in the nearby fishing village of Cabanas and a weekly market in Olhão. Nearby Cacela Velha offers spectacular views over the Ria Formosa. Near to Tavira is the areas Cabanas and Pedras del Rey, both very small beachfront villages. In the small village of Luz de Tavira there is one of the finest examples of Manueline art and craftsmanship around the southern door of the Parish Church. Santa Luzia is a very small un-spoilt village with a fort and has its name from an Italian effigy of the Virgin Mary that was recovered from a shipwrecked. To the east of Tavira and overlooking the sea can be found the original traditional village of Cacela-a-Velha used by the Phoenicians and later becoming the possession of the Knights of Santiago in 1240. At night, a treat awaits you back in Tavira. The town is transformed, with its illuminated white buildings and Moorish rooftops providing an attractive backdrop to the variety of restaurants and bars with their tempting Portuguese menus.
