Immunisations

No international immunisation is needed when entering Tunisia.

Malaria

The risk of contracting the disease is negligible provided that you take the standard precautions. Malaria tablets, a good insect repellent (particularly in the evening), long-sleeved shirts and mosquito coils are advisable precautions.

Dress Code

Tunisians have a generally relaxed attitude and casual clothing is worn. While topless bathing is allowed around most hotel swimming pools and on private beaches, respectable dress is required at religious sites.

Electricity

UK electrical appliances will work but need a two-pin continental adapter. Tunisia works on the European standard 220 volts (the same as the UK and Republic of Ireland).

Currency

The unit of currency is the Dinar and it can only be obtained in Tunisia. The exchange rate is fixed and is approximately 2 dinars to 1 Sterling. Cash or travellers cheques are readily exchangeable in banks, hotels and bureau de change. Receipts need to be kept to change leftover dinars back. ATMs are also available in major cities and credit cards are widely accepted.

Postal Service

Open Mon - Fri 08h00 - 16h30 & Sat 08h00 - 12h00. Mail may be addressed to you Post Restante. The main post offices have special counters for this purpose. Postage stamps are widely available (e.g. at some cafes and branches of the Central News Agency - CNA).

Tipping

Some restaurants include a service charge, but it is mainly left to the discretion of customers to tip staff who have been helpful and attentive.

Travellers' Cheques

Most international travelers' cheques are accepted provided they are in an acceptable currency and may be cashed at most banks. Many hotels and shops also provide this service.

Language

Arabic is the official language, but French is widely spoken all over the country. Shopkeepers and hotel staff usually speak three or four European languages and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Driving

Vehicles drive on the right, roads are generally good. Petrol is cheap and there is no shortage of petrol stations. Road signs are in Arabic with French/International translation.
