About the area around Puerto de la Cruz |
|
Puerto de la Cruz is the most important tourist town on the north of the island. It is the ideal place to have a relaxing holiday but not being isolated, as it has a familiar atmosphere and squares and sea boulevards full of charm. We highly recommend the visit to Jardín Botánico, Parque Taoro, Playa (Beach) Jardín, Lago Martianez and to have a coffee at Plaza de la Iglesia or Plaza del Charco, the heart of the city where tourist and natives meet. Puerto is a mixture of sea and old and new streets in unchanging time which blends surprisingly with a modern tourist industry. Nearly a million tourists use the 30000 (thirty thousand) beds available and in spite of progress, Puerto is still an attractive place to visit. The Canaries are the only area of Europe where one can really enjoy a good climate in winter. Puerto de la Cruz, situated on the coast, has the privilege of an all year round temperature climate into a medium of 19ºC in winter and 25ºC in summer. Puerto de la Cruz is in fact Tenerife's oldest tourist destination. The town was originally founded at the beginning of the 17th Century, when as Puerto da la Orotava, it was at the centre of the north coasts fishing and maritime activities, however, it was not until the mid 20th Century when the real tourist boom began. However, unlike the major resorts in the south of the island, despite the last 40 years of mass tourism, coupled with an almost insatiable demand for tourist beds in the town, Puerto de la Cruz has still to this day managed to retain a strong sense of its Canarian heritage, and over 35,000 of the islands resident population still choose to live here. |
