The
charming seaside town of Villajoyosa lies just 10km south of Benidorm.
Famous for its brightly coloured houses and for its chocolate,
Villajoyosa has a name which means 'Jewelled Town'. Historically
Villajoyosa has relied mostly on fishing for its economic survival, and
fishing remains today as an important industry for the town - the
bustling harbour and busy afternoon fish market are important features
of Villajoyosa. The bright blue, yellow and red houses were painted so
that fishermen could recognise their home while out at sea and therefore
safely find their way home. Chocolate production has been a feature of
Villajoyosa since the 19th Century and the town has often been called
'Chocolate Heaven'.
