The village of Waxham is on the coast, a 10 minutes drive from Stalham, and has a range of holiday accommodation on offer. Sometimes spotted from the beach are seals, swimming along the shore. Walking towards Horsey on the beach, seals may also be seen resting on the beach or basking in the sun. Waxham has one of the largest tithe barns in the country that was built in the 16th century. This featured in the BBC “Restoration” programme, as it had fallen into disrepair. Waxham Barn was built in the 1570’s by the Woodhouse family and is constructed using parts of 14th and 15th century monasteries that the Woodhouses bought after Henry VIII closed them down. Norfolk County Council bought the building in 1991, as the previous owners could no longer afford to look after it. It has since undergone extensive refurbishments. Waxham Barn is open during July and August or on Sundays. There were once two villages, Waxham Magna and Waxham Parva, the latter having been washed away in the 13th century and the modern day hamlet of Waxham now sits behind the dunes.
