About the area around Javea |
|
Javea is a wonderful port with stunning scenery all around. This holiday resort is divided into three main areas. The Arenal, Port and Old Town. The Arenal Beach has bee awarded the blue flag for perfection of the water quality and cleanliness of the beach. The slope into the sea is very gentle so a good place for introducing kids to swimming in the sea. Leaving the beach you can take advantage of the public showers and toilet facilities. The curve of the beach is surrounded by a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Behind the Beach is a Promenade lined with Bars and Restaurants offering everything from Live Bands to Traditional Restaurants. In the evening this is a great place for a stroll - and there are Craft Stalls set up along the Prom. This is one of the three centres of Javea. The others are the Port and the Old Town. A great way to get between these three areas in the fun Train which runs right up till the early hours of the morning. The Port area is where the majority of the Shops are, some excellent restaurants and tapas. While this part of town is visited by tourists it feels very much a Spanish community. This is where the Fiestas take place - like the Festival of the Port in September. The Church is worth a visit, the shape of the roof inside looks like the hull of a boat. During the Port Festival watch out for the fireworks they lay along the street. They often paint the streets blue during this fiesta. Taking the road West from the Port you will pass a selection of "chiringuitos" which are summer bars open from Midday till about 4am which are a great place for a cool late night drink - they have music playing and are populated almost exclusively by local Spanish people and are a great way to end the evening - the sound of the waves lapping the shore. Javea Old Town is where you will find the main Church, the Market, Post Office and the usual Restaurants and Bars. Before tourism, Javea was a small sleepy town relying on the port for fishing and farming for local income. Many of the 'fincas' that have been feature very wide nayas - these are the covered exterior areas - and were originally used for drying the crops - such as grapes by hanging the fruit from poles that were placed across the nayas. In the main "casco urbano" surrounding the Market and Church there are narrow "Moorish style" streets which cars cannot access but which are lined on both sides by shops of all kinds, art galleries and restaurants. Thanks to the streets being so narrow they avoid a lot of the heat of the day so a walk around here can be really pleasant. It's also worth checking out the indoor market. |
